Kehilat HaNahar’s Adult Education Program Celebrates its “Bagel University”

“Bagel University” (also known as “Bagel U”) is a learning experience newly formed at Kehilat HaNahar, where members teach members at their homes on a broad range of topics within Jewish heritage. Over the years courses have included:

Kosher Pickles led by member Arnie Feinman, discussed the origins of pickle making. He discussed the geographic relationship of different types of pickles, the difference between store-bought and homemade pickles and sour vs. half-sour, and what makes a pickle kosher. There was a smorgasbord of pickles to sample, provided by Arnie's wife Sally.

Mezuzah Making got started in the ceramic studio of Sharon Leibson where participants created and painted their own personal mezuzahs. Mezuzahs are placed as doorposts at the entrance to a Jewish home.

Hebrew Prayer with Understanding, led by Susan Rattner, examined each word in a selected prayer for subtle meaning and relevance to one’s personal life, making the experience of prayer creative and anything but routine.

Jewish Intellectual History, which started at the home of Abraham Leibson, investigated the philosophical ideas from intellectual leaders such as Baruch Spinoza and Martin Buber.

There was a series of classes held to learn about Jewish Food Preparations related to the holiday season.  Classes included making Hamantashen (fruit-filled triangle-shaped cookies) for Purim, baking challah (twisted bread) for Shabbat, and preparing Passover foods. Pictured here Sarah Levinson (left) and Sally Feineman shaped their mandelbrot loaves (similar to biscottis).  Jane Barg (not pictured here) led the Passover food preparation class.

Kehilat Hanahar plans to continue its “Bagel U” classes as a way of helping its members gain a deeper understanding of topics of personal interest related to Judaism.
