Adult Ed: The Rabbis class with Julie

In a two-part workshop, Julie Stockler will help us look closely at “The Rabbis” ("The Sages") whose iconic texts have shaped Jewish practice for nearly 2,000 years and reassess the myths we tell ourselves about them.

We talk a lot about “The Sages” or “The  Rabbis” of old—and their iconic texts that have shaped Jewish practice for nearly 2,000 years.  But who were these guys? What made them create the Mishnah, the Talmud, and other iconic compilations? And who put them in charge anyway?

In a two-part workshop, Julie Stockler will help us look closely at “The Rabbis” and reassess the myths we tell ourselves about them.  In the first session, she will present some surprising information about how the Sages actually lived and learned in Jewish society after the fall of the Second Temple.  She will define their major works and explore the processes that lead to their creation.

In the second session, Julie invites you to roll up your sleeves and explore intriguing samples of Midrash, Mishneh, and Talmud (all in English). In this way, you’ll finally be able to differentiate one rabbinic text from another and see for yourself what all the fuss is about!

Although the classes are being held during regular Torah Study (12-1:30 pm at KHN), all are welcome to attend.

February 15th, 2018 12:00 PM   through   1:30 PM
