What Does Islamic Law Say?

Penn doctoral candidate David Zvi Kalman will deliver a talk about where ISIS's version of Islam stands in relation to other Muslim practices and thought.

On Tuesday, November 14, from 7-8:30 p.m., UPenn doctoral candidate(focus on Jewish Law, Islamic Law & history of technology) David Zvi Kalman will deliver a talk about where ISIS's version of Islam stands in relation to other Muslim practices and thought. He will use feminist, early 20th-century Egyptian, and modern Iranian readings of Islam as a counterpoint, since there is more than one Muslim group looking to bring Islamic texts into conversation (or conflict) with the modern world. He will also briefly talk about some American Muslim intellectual activity.
